Youth employability is one of the most important challenges that governments in different countries must face, since if they do not offer jobs or new opportunities for younger generations, communities will not be able to prosper.
Due to the pandemic derived from COVID-19, today more than ever young people are uncertain about finding a decent job when they graduate from university. Below we show you a context of what the world has experienced in recent months regarding youth employability.
Youth employability during the pandemic
According to information from the International Chile Mobile Number List Labor Organization (ILO) , at least one in six young people in the world does not have a job due to the current health crisis.
An example of this is our country, where the unemployed population reaches 2.8 million people , and 26.7% belongs to youth unemployment after the pandemic (National Occupation and Employment Survey, INEGI, August 2020).
The ILO states that since March 2020, the evolution of labor markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were hit by the COVID-19 health crisis , and as a result there was a break in economic evolution with serious consequences for employment.
Many of the people who were affected by losing their jobs decided not to start looking for a new one. The reason? They considered that the restrictions imposed on economic activities would reduce the probability of achieving this, coupled with the fear of risking contagion.
Today all sectors of society must be committed to these generations and provide alternatives so that young people have support when looking for a job.
One of the companies that for some years has been willing to help young people develop their skills and provide experience so that they can find better jobs or create their own businesses is Nestlé .
V Pacific Alliance Youth Meeting
Nestlé, through its program called the Nestlé Pacific Alliance Youth Initiative and the Swiss government, has been carrying out the Pacific Alliance Youth Meeting for five years , a global event that invites thousands of young people to meet and visualize the job opportunities of your future.
The Pacific Alliance was born in 2011 as an economic and development initiative between four Latin American nations: Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. And today it has become the axis of a new way of doing business in this area of the continent.
This year, due to the pandemic, the event was held virtually, with Chile being the host country. It lasted two full days and virtual conferences were held with relevant topics for all the young people who belong to this alliance.
This 2020 meeting was called “Young people, employability and the impact of the pandemic”, and businessmen, entrepreneurs and young people from the member countries of the Pacific Alliance gathered , with the aim of providing young people with tools that help them face the new work reality.
In this sense, the experts who participated reflected mainly on the following topics:
The employment situation faced by young people in the Pacific Alliance after the pandemic experienced this year.
Good practices from the four countries to combat youth unemployment.
How the pandemic has forced us to migrate from the traditional educational model to a hybrid one, demanding new ways of planning and addressing the digital divide.
The event was headed by Laurent Freixe, CEO of Nestlé for the Americas Zone; Fausto Costa, Executive President of Nestlé Mexico; and the Executive Presidents of Nestlé from the Chilean, Colombian and Peruvian markets.
